Portland Lawyer Softball League
Sometimes, We Hit It Out of the Park
We like to win. We just don't take winning seriously enough to bench our friends.
SFK joined Portland's Lawyer Softball League just a few months after opening, but Sam had already been playing for years. He started as a summer clerk at Dunn Carney in 2007 and brought the tradition with him to SFK.
Since then, there have been memorable shirts, plenty of games, and some very large trophies. One of which is currently, and we hope temporarily, in the possession of another firm.
The formula is pretty simple: bring together lawyers, staff, family, and friends; come up with a great team name; design a shirt people will remember; play great music; laugh a lot; and try to win a few games along the way.
At SFK, softball is less about assembling the perfect lineup and more about getting everyone into the game. Everyone has a role. Sam plays and meticulously curates the walk-up music. Jaimee provides a steady stream of good-natured trash talk. Anne maintains a rigorous one-game-per-season attendance schedule. And once a summer, Beez Neez rolls up with gourmet sausages, including its famous reindeer sausage, for one of the most anticipated nights of the season.
That's not to say we won't politely suggest someone sit out an inning when one of those very large trophies is on the line. We're lawyers. The competitive streak comes with the territory.
Most of us will never be paid to play softball. Fortunately, we have day jobs.
It's competitive. It's collaborative. Everyone gets a chance to play. And every once in a while, we hit it out of the park.

Pick an epic team name. Make a shirt worth remembering. Pick up a few trophies along the way.

The SFK Softball Years

Stranger Swings
SFK wasted no time getting into the game. Just months after opening our doors, we entered the Lawyer Softball League as Stranger Swings, complete with a Stranger Things-inspired logo. A new firm. A new team. The same guy behind the jerseys.

Subpoena Colada
Because apparently practicing law and playing softball were not enough. We needed tropical wordplay, too. Subpoena Colada was born.

Ballable Hours
Ballable Hours took the field in Dodger blue, a surprisingly restrained color choice by Sam's standards. The name, fortunately, made up for it.

Squid Pro Quo
By Squid Pro Quo, there was no turning back. Another summer. Another legal pun. Another jersey Sam could convince everyone to wear.

Depo Babies
This year's entry: Depo Babies. We'll let you decide whether the names are getting better.
Next Up
The next name, jersey, and season are still to come. Check back for the 2027 entry.

Oregon State Bar Bulletin
Runs, Hits, Connections
In 2023, the Oregon State Bar Bulletin featured Sam, Smith Foster King, and Portland's Lawyer Softball League in "Runs, Hits, Connections," an article about the camaraderie, collegiality, and community the league has built beyond the office and courtroom.
